Corolla Wild Horse Fund Museum:
For centuries, wild Banker horses outnumbered humans on the Currituck Outer Banks of the Southern East Coast. Colonial Spanish Mustangs were first brought to the New World in the 1500s. Over the next century, several other historical events helped to populate the same wild herds that exist today. Only 100 years ago there were as many as 5,000 – 6,000 horses that roamed the Outer Banks of the North Carolina coast, sadly that population has significantly decreased, primarily due to development and the growing population in surrounding areas. After the tragic deaths of over 30 horses in the late 1980s and 90s, a group of caring citizens formed the non-profit Corolla Wild Horse Fund. The original intent was to stop horse fatalities caused by highway traffic. This involved building a sea-to-sound fence for a protected 7,544 acre sanctuary and relocating the remaining horses. The Fund has continued to care for, protect and conserve the herd for decades. The Fund has also established and now manages a 31-acre Betsy Dowdy Equine Center for rescued horses that cannot return to the wild herd. Blossom, Brio, Ducky, Kitty Hawk, Ocean Pearl and Virginia Dare are just a few of the incredible rescues that call the center home.
The Corolla Wild Horse Fund Museum is an amazing place to visit to learn more about their history, how the Fund protects and cares for the herd, their expansive sanctuary habitat and the equine center.
